Wonder Type: Natural
Country: Sweden
Best of: Islands, Landforms
Description:
The Stockholm archipelago is the largest archipelago in Sweden, and the second-largest archipelago in the Baltic Sea (the largest being across the Baltic in Finland). From the Middle Ages until the end of the Cold War in the 1990s, the Swedish military has had troops, ships and fortifications in the archipelago, for the defense of Stockholm. Today, most facilities are closed down. In general, the further out to the ocean, the more spectacular the view. During summer, sailboats add to the scenery. Among peculiarities to expect, are small islets with a single red cabin, and cormorant colonies. [More Details]
